What's in a Name?

Tis but thy name that is my enemy;Thou art thyself, though not a Montague.

What's Montague? it is nor hand, nor foot, Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part

Belonging to a man. O, be some other name!

What's in a name? that which we call a rose By any other name would smell as sweet;

So Romeo would, were he not Romeo call'd, Retain that dear perfection which he owes

Without that title. Romeo, doff thy name, And for that name which is no part of thee

Take all myself.

Romeo and Juliet (2.2.38-49) William Shakespeare

It is only your name that is my enemy. You are yourself, not just a Montague. What does ‘Montague’ even mean? It’s not about a hand, a foot, an arm, a face, or any other part of your body. You could just take another name!

What’s so special about a name? The thing we call a rose would be just as sweet-smelling if it were called something else.

Likewise Romeo, if he weren’t called Romeo, would still be perfect even if he were called something else. Romeo, lose the surname and without it I’m yours.

Not only people but companies around the world changed their name and it turned out to be fortune creator for them.

Haribhai Jariwala to Popular Sanjeev Kumar

Mohd. Yusuf Khan to Superstar Dilip Kumar

Therefore William Bhai, There is so much to a name that it can make or break a brand.

I believe not many would have read about these global giants.

  • Tokyo Tshushin Kogyo
  • Cofinity
  • Marufuku Company
  • Jerry's guide to World Wide Web
  • Brad's drink
  • Pete's super submarines
  • BackRub
  • Blue Ribbon Sports
  • Hayakawa Brothers Shokai

As the advert says " Just do it" on a swoosh marked logo and sells like hot cake, imagine the transformation of blue ribbon sports from a shoe distributor of Japanese company Onitsuka Tiger to a world renowned name you can easily guess...NIKE it is.

Even more interesting a budding tech company from Stanford registered as BackRub to a house hold search engine called GOOGLE.

Popular card game manufacturer of Japan in 1889 named a Marufuku company after 61 years renamed a Nintendo.

Another Japanese firm Tokyo Tshishin Kogyo founded in 1946 as a telecommunication and radio repair shop, created first transistor radio    and credited as world first creator of Transistor television. Later changed its name to SONY, a combination of latin word Sonus means sound and Sonny a 1950 term for American cowboy.

A company registered for cryptography called Cofinity (combination of confidence and affinity) later in 1998 became a popular payment company called Paypal.

Caleb Bradham in 1893, created a brand of softdrink called Brad's drink, but in 1898, it was named to Pepsi-Cola which means 'aided digestion'.

The every ready sharp pencil by Hayakawa Brothers Shokai, renamed itself to SHARP after its first successful product name above.

In the year 1965, Pete's Super Submarines was opened following a conversation between Fred Deluca and friend Dr Peter Buck, but later shortened the name to SUBWAY, but white and yellow logo was launched not until their first franchise in Connecticut in 1974.

That's not all therefore I will leave you with three large brands to search for their successful names:

1. Quantum Computer Services

2. Auction Web

3. Sound of Music

Let me know their names in the comment section.

Its a Bot Bot World

O ne day you wake up in a different body which is much stronger and programmed to have military skills and a virtual assistant feeding you with the necessary information before you venture into this new planet. A scene from a sci-fi series looks impossible. There is this web series on Netflix "Altered Carbon" depicting infinite life span and AI-based hotel and AI unicorns and the concept of body-switching called changing the sleeve as you change clothes. How far it seems from reality or just a matter of time, well you may find some of the things changing our lifestyle and we are being programmed to use them. Believe it, they are part of our lives and we can't imagine living without them, Hey Siri! Please play my favorite classical music...Hi, Shakti playing your favorite music.   The Future Intelligent assistants 24/7 at your disposal and it's not a sci-fi movie but in reality. Hey! Alexa or Hi Cortana and other less popular programs are a necessary part of our dail...

Homeostasis

I am a fan of homeostasis, and in every phase of life this proves to be a myth yet my heart always wants to see things as they were and should remain. Beauty, youth, position, fame almost everything we treasure is transient in nature.  Oscar Wilde , Irish wit, poet, and dramatist wrote a story in 1890 ,"Picture of Dorian Grey" reflects similar thoughts mankind nurture and its  obsession to live a lie.  Picture Source: Wikipedia  (Tutankhamun and  Ankhesenamun) It was believed in ancient Egypt that rulers carry their wealth and servants to heaven, therefore post their death they were buried along with their wealth and servants.  Coming back to the story of Dorian Grey, I recall a film called " The league of extraordinary gentlemen"(2003) directed by Stephen Norrington. Adaptation of book from Alan Moore and Kevin'o'Neil. Famed adventurer Allain Quartermain (Sean Connery) is recruited by the British Empire for their L...

Go - A Game to Learn

O ften games are part of childhood memories and each of us may have played several board games that were not only intriguing but hold a deeper meaning to existence. Games are a microcosm of real-life strategy and problem-solving skills.   Many of these children grow to be the likes of Bobby Fischer, Vishwanathan Anand, Garry Kasparov, or Lee Sedol, These are some of the great human minds or Tendulkar of board games.   Games lead to an interesting evolution in modern-day computing and other technological developments such as deep learning, in simple terms machine learning or artificial intelligence (AI). Refer to my last blog on AI and there is a glimpse of challenges thrown at the human race by them.  Who will be the Master? It can mimic the brain functioning of human beings in detecting objects, recognizing speech, Translate language and make decisions, Deep Learning AI is able to learn without human supervision and use data to draw interference. AI Guru Kai-Fu-Lee predi...
